As a new or potential resident we would like to welcome you as a customer of the McPherson Board of Public Utilities of McPherson, Kansas.
To establish service with the McPherson BPU, a customer service representative will calculate a deposit on the residence you are moving into based on a twelve month average billing. Deposits may be made in four monthly installments. A letter of credit from a previous utility may be provided in lieu of a deposit. Cash deposits are kept for 18 months by the utility, after which time a deposit may be refunded with interest, if good credit has been established.
To request service be transferred from one location to another in McPherson a move order can be placed by phone or in person at our office. In the event you would move from McPherson, our customer service representatives will be happy to provide you with a letter of credit to pass on to your next utility provider.
The BPU provides electric and water service to all homes and industries in the city limits of McPherson and 1,200 rural customers outside the city. Customers are billed monthly for water and electric service. Charges for trash pickup and sewer service are included on the BPU monthly billing for city residents.
The following customer services are offered for residential customers of the BPU:
• Budget Payment - Requires customers to occupy a residence for a minimum of one year before being eligible for Budget billing. An average bill is then calculated and your monthly payment remains constant for one year.
• Automatic Withdrawal - Offers customers the convenience of having your monthly bill debited directly from your local financial institution checking account.
• Operation Warmth - A local program developed to help prevent the interruption of heating and electric services to needy customers. Tax deductible contributions to the fund may also be made at the Municipal Center.
Utility payments may be mailed to PO Box 1008; paid at our customer service department or the drive-up window, both located at 400 East Kansas Avenue.
Trash pickup is provided weekly by the McPherson Area Solid Waste Utility (MASWU). Questions associated with trash pickup or billing should be directed to the Solid Waste Utility at 241-6559. The Solid Waste Utility offices are located at 1431 17th Ave.
The BPU is a municipally owned utility with approximately 8,000 customers. We boast the lowest electric rates in the state of Kansas and rank among the lowest nationwide.
